Pause Before Starting a Nonprofit

PAUSE grid

A structured reflection tool for founders and funders

You may have seen this document we made on our blog or as a conference handout.

Are you thinking about starting a nonprofit? Spending most of our days with nonprofits is a reminder about the excitement and stressors of the sector. We love being a strategist and attorney to nonprofits, but wow, we’ve heard all the reasons for starting them and all the surprises that people have along the way. If you’re going to start one, then we hope you will feel prepared for what’s ahead. If we can be part of that journey, let us know.

This online version of our “PAUSE: Before You Start a Nonprofit” helps you go a step further in what’s motivating this work and where you might feel alignment or friction. As you answer the questions, you will see some quick insights populate at the bottom of the survey. Consider this tool a jumpstart for reflection. (It’s not legal advice, ok?)

What your responses might be surfacing . . .

From this brief survey, you're raising a few insights for us to consider:

Some responses reflect personal motivation, such as purpose, connection, or lived experience. These are important starting points. They don’t always require forming a new organization to act on them.

Some responses suggest assumptions about how nonprofits work, especially when it comes to funding, collaboration, or ease of operation. A nonprofit is not a funding mechanism. It’s a structure with ongoing financial, legal, and operational responsibilities.

Some responses point to parts of organizational life that (would) feel frustrating or undesirable, such as planning, logistics, or compliance. These responsibilities can become complex, even for small nonprofits.

Some responses suggest that the idea may still be developing. Before forming a new entity, it’s good to map existing efforts, test assumptions, and clarify your role in the broader ecosystem of good ideas and good deeds.

Some responses reflect preferences around autonomy, control, or collaboration. Many people start nonprofits to have "their own thing" but nonprofits are governed by Boards and shared decision-making.
